ANTHRAX

"stomp 442"
Year:  1995
Country:  US
City:  New York
Label:  Nuclear Blast
Format:  CD
Tracks:  11
Time:  50 min.
Genre:  rock
Style:        Alternative Metal

Anthrax is one of thrash metal's "big 4", together with Metallica, Slayer and Megadeth. Anthrax was always most playful of them all already in 1980s, best known from their flirtation with rap music. In 1990 the band had released their most mature, and slower, thrash metal album, 'Persistence of Time'. And then Joey Belladonna left... With new vocalist John Bush came another change: Anthrax took more and more steps towards more groove metal presentation with fine 1993 album 'Sound of White Noise'. Then Dan Spitz left, who played most of the lead guitar parts. Maybe it means something, that Mr. Spitz didn't write anything for 'Sound...' album any more, even though he never was a main writer for the band. Maybe he didn't want the band to get too groovy, rocking? So, welcome to the first Anthrax album, that can be said to contain alternative rock and nothing else. Back when it was released, it might have sounded heavy as the ball of metal junk (no pun intended) on the cover. On the other hand, it looks more like a rock album artwork. Guys were around 30 years old, and new winds were blowing. So many bands tried to survive the attack of grunge rock by making changes in their sound and songwriting in early 1990s. The album is rocking and at times also punk, and those nu-metal whiffs featured aren't so much of killjoy as they could have been. Anthrax, generally, still did things by their own book. 'Stomp 442' is definitely better than their complete discography and is specially recommended for those non-orthodox metalheads!

URSINNE

"swim with the leviathan"
Year:  2017
Country:  UK
City:  London
Label:   Transcending Obscurity
Format:  CD, LP
Tracks:  12
Time:  42 min.
Genre:  rock
Style:        Death Metal

Two of the busiest gents in death metal have joined forces to unleash merry hell in the name of old-school, Swedish death metal carnage….and Swim With The Leviathan has turned out to be a right royal face-ripper of an album. Dave Ingram (ex-Bolt Thrower, Ex-Benediction, ex-Hail Of Bullets, Down Among The Dead Men, Echelon) & Jonny Pettersson (Henry Kane, Wombbath, Just Before Dawn amongst others) have converged to show us all how this shit should be done and Swim With The Leviathan is an album that lives and dies by its intensity, coming at you like a dozen enraged Leatherface’s with chainsaw’s raised, buzzing inches from your face. The saw is definitely the fuckin’ law here as Pettersson’s riffs cut a swathe through your cranium with relentless efficiency and that classic Swedish death sound. From the feedback drenched intro to the ferocious “Devil May Care”, to the blistering speed of “Talons”, Ursinne deliver death metal goodies like their lives depend on it and the result is a shoe-in on many a death-head’s best of the year list. Special note must also go to the abundance of cover versions included here, a situation that usually prompts much derision from this writer. However, Ursinne’s choice of covers are surprising and most of all, they’re fuckin’ good fun. Can “Turning Japanese” cut the mustard as a death metal song? In the hands of Ursinne it sure can! It’s also no real secret that Dave Ingram is a fan of Queens of the Stone Age so to encounter Ursinne’s version of “Monsters In Your Parasol” comes only as a semi-surprise. And again, it wor... Josh Homme’s stoner masterclass reworked for the death metal generation. Incidentally, lyrics such as “the walls are closing in again” also help the cause; sinister tones and symbolism meshing well with the reworked death metal carnage that surrounds them. This is a true Britsh meets Scandinavian success with Dave Ingram’s all too recognisable growls and roars elevating what could be considered a mere knock-off of Entombed/Dismember classics. Fortunately, that’s not the case, as Ursinne have delivered a violent, endlessly entertaining old-school death metal record that’s mandatory for those who still worship at the altars of those pioneering Swedish bands from the early 90’s. Ursinne translates from Swedish into English as anger; rage; wrath; fury….and that;s exactly what Swim With The Leviathan delivers….along with some cracking, unexpected cover versions of course. *Review originally published on worshipmetal.com

DEMOLITION HAMMER

"time bomb"
Year:  1994
Country:  US
City:  New York
Label:  Century Media
Format:  CD, LP
Tracks:  11
Time:  35 min.
Lyrical themes:  social issues, politics
Genre:  rock
Style:        Thrash Metal

We all know Demolition Hammer's crushing and full-speed ahead thrash metal motif on the "Epidemic Of Violence" and "Tortured Existence" albums. Without Vinny Haze behind the kit, one could only wonder how the next album was going to sound like. Good news for everyone else, Alex Marquez (Solstice, Malevolent Creation, Disincarnate) sat behind the kit. The result? A groove metal aka "metalcore"album, mostly mid-tempo, which truly shocked the people at the time who expected something heavier and faster than "Epidemic Of Violence". Even lyrics are not metal topis but rather hardcore topics (social issues, ecology, politics, etc.). You can hear the trademark Demolition Hammer vocals (fuckin' love Steve Reynolds' voice) and the groovy chops of Malevolent Creation, minus the speed, plus the atmosphere. At time this is their last album dated 1994 and despite the group disbanded in 1995, they returned in 2016 with the original line-up.

CHAOS UK

Year:  2018
Country:  UK
City:  Bristol
Label:  none
Format:  digital
Tracks:  15
Time:  36 min.
Genre:  rock
Style:         Punk        Hardcore

Unofficial but very nice compilation with fifteen tracks appeared in five EP's recorded by the band from 1993 to 2016. Here are we go with this great and already legend band which is still quite unknown even in the hardcore punk scene. Their sound continue to be noisy and dirty, and quite speed tempo, in the UK 82 bands, you know. is moderately fast, but not hardcore. And also never forget the jokes and good humor of the singer, Simon, with a peasant and almost rural voice... ha ha! Chaos UK started late 1979 and still active despite all these years. They have made good splits next to Extreme Noise Terror, Concrete Sox, Fuk or Raw Noise to mention a few. So this compilation exist at the moment just on digital format but is a perfect way to enjoy these guys during fourty minutes. Enjoy it

Year:  1991
Label:  Toys Factory
Format:  CD , LP
Tracks:  11
Time:  31 min.
Genre:  rock
Style:        Punk        Hardcore

This was the first CHAOS UK album from the 90s decade and included some new tracks and also old classic songs. Firstly released by brittish label "Vinyl Japan Records" in 1991 and late there were different releases in labels such as Toy's Factory Records (in 1992) or "Creative Man Records" (1998). I think the problem with CHAOS UK is they have made too much compilation, live albums, ep´s and splits next to other bands... and sometimes it's a little bit difficult to know wich are their official full lenght albums. This one here like other titles (of course) is an official album and perhaps one of its complete discography, despite is also maybe one of the most forgotten. Very good quality sound, production and also good songs. The band started in 1979 and is still active, making live concerts from time to time in UK, Europe, USA and Japan.

Genre:  rock
Style:        Punk        Hardcore

CHAOS UK are an english hardcore punk band formed in 1979 in Portishead, near Bristol. They played fast aggressive hardcore punk rock initially. The original line up of Simon on vocals, Andy on guitar, Chaos (aka "Lice") on bass and Potts on drums recorded two EP's and a full LP for Riot City Record. In the process they along with fellow Bristolians Disorder and Stoke's Discharge revolutionised the hardcore punk scene. In particular the Japanese 80's hardcore punk bands were heavily influenced by CHAOS UK and Disorder's brutal take on punk. CHAOS UK's debut LP was notable in the fact that the band's label claimed it was the "fastest, noisiest LP in the cosmos" in the short lived "Punk Lives" magazine; vocal duties on this recording were also handled by bassist Chaos.
